Re: Palestinian textbooks still promote hate, lies & martyrdom posted by Joan O'C
Following in the tradition of his predecessor Arafat, Abbas has made many promises and signed various agreements in relation to pursuing peace with Israel, all of which he has reneged on almost before the words were out of his mouth or the ink had dried on the paper.
One of the most fundamental and important promises broken was for PA leaders to cease inciting Jew hatred though speeches and state controlled agencies and through the PA educational system.
It is of course deeply disturbing that Abbas has done nothing to stop dissemination of Jew/Israeli hatred including replacing school textbooks that promote such hatred by teaching revisionist history and the like.
Not to come to Paul Martin's defence Joan, but it is unfair to single out Paul Martin & Company for blithely going along with or excusing Palestinian perfidy without missing a step of support for Palestinians. Canada is far from alone in this regard.
Just as the West put their faith in Arafat as a partner for peace with Israel for as long as they could stand his stench, so too will be the case with Abbas.
A fundamental problem is one of the sense of Western paternalistic superiority the West brings to its dealings with the Muslim world. The West is trapped in its own conventional thinking that how Western leaders negotiate between themselves and reach and abide by the agreements they make, is the same way Abbas thinks or can be induced to think and that he can convince his people to think like Westerners as well.
The closest Arafat and Abbas have ever come to the Western way of looking and dealing with things is to mouth the words the West wants to hear. They are however not capable of putting those words to action, because those words run counter to all they and their people feel and believe.
Western leaders like Martin just cannot seem to accept that Abbas will not come around to their way of thinking and acting and so they persist in supporting Palestinians and pushing Israel to make concessions in the delusional belief that the Palestinians, if bribed enough will come around to their way of thinking.
In the result, the West is selling Israel down the river and in fact the West is forcing Israel to help row the boat, all in the West's false hope that the Palestinians are capable of seeing and doing things the way the West wants to see and do things.
The evidence of course is incontrovertible that Abbas' mind set is, like Arafat's was, rigidly set in his culture and he cannot, at least so far make the transition into a Western culture mindset.
