David, your analysis on the Liberal's proposed Carbon tax is excellent. Clear, concise and persuasive.

I am wondering however if one is to reject this Liberal proposal, is there another proposal you think would be more realistic or do you say at least in the near future, no such proposals are advised.

Your noting in point 3 that the real problem with GHG emissions is not with Canada, U.S. and the EU, but rather with countries such as China and India. I would suggest the real problem lies with just about every industrialized or semi-industrialized nation in the world except for Canada, the U.S. and the EU.

The Cap and trade policies sound, according to you like a variation of sorts on the carbon tax and thus that is not the way to go either. Further I think you noted that the way that idea is premised, advantages the EU over Canada and the U.S.

What good is it for us well intentioned Westerners to care about the enivronment and do our part to protect it voluntarily or through monies taken from our pockets by various tax schemes, when the good we do, pales by comparison to the bad so many others in the world do?

Is that however a reason to do nothing?

Are there not material goods, services and technology that these environmentalist enemies such as China and India absolutely need for their economy and well being?

If Canada, the U.S. and the EU are serious about garnering co-operation from the GHG nasty nations, perhaps an embargo on these necessities getting into these environmental enemies hands just might be the ticket to force the co-operation that good arguments fail to achieve.

If there are things China for instance must have and they can't get those things, China is hardly going to cut off its nose to spite its face as regards trying to carry on trade as much as possible.

I look forward to your further thoughts David.
