In a little noticed speech, Israel's ambassador to Canada, Alan Baker, slams our timid "mainstream" Jewish organizations, for their timidity in defending Israel on our universities.
The article below devotes most of its space praising the Canadian Inatitute for Jewish Research (CIJR). But the ambassador makes two telling comments concerning the current appeasement policy towards anti-Israel extremeists on campus:
-- the "organized Jewish community" (Baker's phrase) often advised him not to speak on campuses, so as not "to stir up any problems";
-- he criticizes Jewish leaders for themselves refusing to speak on campuses, and to give support to beleagered Jewish students. He says there is more to leadership than "organizing dinners and galas to raise money for Israel and Jewish institutions".
To its credit, the Canadian Jewish News published this article, but they buried it on page 35 of last week's issue. Mr. Baker's views deserve a larger circulation.
