Speakers Clash About What to Do About Campus Anti-Semitism posted by David Murrell
Tilly Shames is the kind of person who responds to those trying to call her home a dump and burn it down, by devoting all her energies to making sure her home always looks good and immaculate inside and out.
The Tilly Shames' are the problem, but so too are the Jewish elite that gives feckless idiots like Shames, positions of leadership in the Jewish community and so too is the Jewish community that tolerates leaders who do not always lead on issues of critical importance to the wellbeing of the Jewish community at large.
York University Jewish studies professor Martin Lockshin seems by his words quoted that he endorses Shames, but seeks a slightly more active approach to countering anti-Israel propagandists. You might call Lockshin a fence sitter, with his legs dangling on the Shames side.
Lawrence Hart, an associate professor of medicine at McMaster University, for his views on the subject, which I have been espousing for years probably is seen by the other two, Shames and Lockshin as right wing, the liberal and liberal-lefts new dirty word accusation of anyone who disagrees with their views.
Note that the report does mention that some in the audience aired their grievances about the ineffectiveness of pro-Israel/Jewish advocacy.
It is telling that "Shames responded by saying that the problems on campus can't be solved by yelling simplistic slogans."
Shames disrespected her audience's concerns by responding in the flip and non responsive way she did.
While it is good news that Shames has taken a job at Hillel at the University of Michigan and thus removed herself from Canada, one can assume from that move that Hillel at the University of Michigan has the same mindset Hillel Canada has. For that matter, it appears that Shames's thinking reflects much of Hillel's thinking across North America.
What is interesting is that the person who replaced Shames did not appear to speak. You can expect their views are not dissimilar from Shames'.
I thus accuse the Shames' and Hillel of being grossly misguided and of incompetence.
I accuse Jewish leadership of elitism and being so concerned about political correctness, they have forgotten that it is more important to be correct and to act on their rights including their right to protect the interests and wellbeing of the Jewish community.
I accuse the large majority of the Jewish community of being complacent and apathetic about these issues that are very real and concerning and doing little more then privately grumbling about these issues when they should be united in demanding more and better leadership from their community leaders.
