Pettigrew dishonours Canadians and terror victims by laying wreath on Arafat's grave: CCD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Toronto, 11 February 2022 Yesterday, Foreign affairs Pierre Pettigrew laid a wreath on the grave of Yasser Arafat on behalf of the government of Canada and Canadians.

"Surely Canadians would chose to honour the victims of terrorism, the thousands of innocent Israelis killed, maimed, and bereaved as a result of the murderous exhortations of Yasser Arafat," said Alastair Gordon, president of the Canadian Coalition for Democracies (CCD). "Instead, our foreign minister honours the leader who has brought nothing but death and suffering to Israelis and Palestinians alike."

"Canada failed to send any high level representative to the funeral of Ronald Reagan, arguably the principal architect of freedom for millions under Soviet tyranny," said Naresh Raghubeer, executive director of CCD. "Yet somehow Arafat, a man who personifies cruelty, corruption, and personal enrichment, and who has kept his people in poverty and ignorance for decades, deserves our repeated honour."

Jamie Christoff, spokesman for Minister Pettigrew, claimed that all senior foreign dignitaries who wished to visit with President Mahmoud Abbas were required to lay a wreath in honour of Arafat. "So Minister Pettigrew is allowing the Palestinian Authority to dictate our foreign policy," added Raghubeer. "Why did US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, not comply with this policy?"

"The Canadian Coalition for Democracies hopes that Arafat's victims, both Israelis and Palestinians, understand that the honour bestowed by Minister Pettigrew represents the government of Canada, but not the people of Canada," said Gordon. "Most Canadians stand with the victims, not their persecutors."
